What is ancestry?

Ancestry is used to describe domain names. The domain name system can be thought of as a tree. The root node is written as "." and is the ultimate ancestor zone. All top level domains like com, net, and org are all its children. So "." is an ancestor of com. com is an ancestor of example.com. example.com is an ancestor of www.example.com.
